Grooming

It is funny having a little girl who watches you all the time and wants to know "why" about everything you do.

Since going back to work 6 months ago I have started wearing makeup again, and in the mornings after my shower Princess loves to hand me my makeup items one by one. Foundation, powder, blush, eyeshadow... For this Christmas just past I got her a set of cheap makeup to play with and she is thrilled, although the results tend to be somewhat startling!

Coming up for a reason for wearing makeup though... it's odd having to think about why I wear makeup (I was determined not to say "to look pretty"!):
"To look less tired."
"To make my skin look more pale and smooth (and then blush to put some colour back)."
"To make my eyes more interesting."

I consider my look fairly "natural" and my grooming routine quite low-maintenance, but even so here is what I do to myself:

  • Wash and condition my hair daily.
  • Style my hair with a touch of wax after every wash.
  • Colour my hair monthly.
  • Have my hair cut regularly.
  • Pluck my eyebrows into shape monthly.
  • Floss and scrub my teeth twice daily.
  • Wash my face with special facewash nightly.
  • Moisturise my face with night cream every night, and with lighter stuff after every shower.
  • Wear makeup out of the house.
  • Trim, file and buff my nails as required.
  • Moisturise my hands and cuticles with special handcream as required.
  • Shave my armpits a couple of times a week.
  • Use deodorant after every shower.
  • Trim and tidy my pubic hair occasionally.
  • Shave my legs a couple of times a week.
  • Pumice my heels as required.
  • Trim and file and buff my toenails as required.
  • Moisturise my feet with special footcream nightly.
  • Moisturise everywhere as required.

Phew!

Did I say natural and low maintenance? What do the unnatural and high-maintenance chicks have to do?!

Splashpark!

We've had some very hot weather lately, where we pretty much just shelter indoors. Last weekend it finally cooled down enough for us to go out, so we took the kids to the pool. They have an awesome splashpark which Princess adored. King didn't care for it much, but he was in a funny mood that day.

I just don't do these any more, do I? I miss Dad looking out for them.

Getting Healthier

I've just come back from the doctor, and my blood results are all back in the normal ranges! Hooray for less stress, less booze, more exercise and better diet.

Especially the less stress part.

We're having a bit of a heatwave here and so are living on salads and steak/chops/chicken. This coupled with us all doing a teetotal January has got to be good! If a bit boring...

After January I have decided that I will have a drinking weekend, and then no booze until I lose 1kg. At which point I will have a drinking weekend and then no booze again until I lose the next 1kg. And so on. Until I drop a dress size and get back into my pre-baby wardrobe.

That's about 5kg. Should be easy, right?

Right?

Drat

I've left my gym kit at home. Bother.

That's probably because I was doing the daycare dropoff today and it's just mental trying to get us all out of the house by 7:30am! Mom has been in Brisbane for most of a week visiting a good friend for a proper holiday (ie no kids, dogsitting or house cleaning involved) lounging around a pool, so for the first time Milord and I have had to tough it out like normal working parents.

I get up at 6am (normally 7am) to shower and dress, then rouse the kids while Milord gets ready. We have a cup of coffee while trying to make the kids eat breakfast an hour earlier than usual, then hustle out the door at 7:30am. Milord goes straight to work and I drop the kids at daycare on my way. At 5pm Milord comes past my office and we swap cars. I work a bit longer while Milord picks up the kids and gets their dinner on, and I am home in time for bath and bedtime. We usually have them settled by 8pm, and collapse!

We did this routine last week Wednesday, Thursday and Friday and by Friday night we were all exhausted and the kids were really acting up. After some decent catching up on sleep over the weekend they are back to their sweet selves thank goodness.

Mom comes home today, which means that from tomorrow we can all have an extra hour's sleep per night and the kids don't have such a long daycare day. They also don't have to go to daycare 5 days a week but get rest days at home (1 day a week at home for Princess, 2 days for King). Breakfast a bit later, dinner a bit earlier, and less of a frantic battle to get them up or to bed.

And fewer cleaning, laundry and cooking duties for me!

We have coped just fine and the house is clean and mostly tidy, but boy am I glad Mom is coming home. She is a real godsend.

Gym!

First week back at work, 3rd gym session of the year.

I've been a gym junkie for years, and when I became a stay-at-home-mum the regular workouts were one of the things I missed most.

Last November the ladies gym closest to work was having a joining special, so I signed up. I went pretty regularly considering my deadlines and the festive season, and now that everyone is back to work I'll get my gym routine back too.

I like to gym over lunchtime on Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays. The gym is a brisk 15 min walk away, so I get a good warmup just getting there, and then I work out for 30 min, shower and walk gently back to work. This all takes a little longer than the approved lunch "hour", but I work longer than required hours most days, so whatever, bite me.

Each visit I'll do something different. On Monday I spent an hour on the floor doing core work - situps, planks etc. Wednesday I took my book along and did a solid half hour on the cross trainer. Today I joined a spin class.

I hurt all over! Hopefully as I get fitter I'll hurt less.

Ladies gyms are great. I've used a lot of gyms over the years and while I'll still let myself get sweaty and disgusting in a mixed gym, it matters less in a ladies gym. You also don't have that faint unsettling sense that you're being perved when you're fit or disrespected when you're fat. The equipment tends to stay a bit nicer too.

However, why is it that so many women will go into the toilet or shower cubicle to get changed? We're all the same, just get a scurry on and don't look and I won't look either. Stop hogging the toilets and showers - some of us actually need a wee or a shower!

Oh and you with the fit body and slutty undies standing around in the middle of the rest of us who are trying to get changed as fast as possible without looking? Just. Eff. Off.

Rekindling

Last night Milord was snoring loudly (he has a cold) before I finished brushing my teeth. Normally I'd just pick up my pillow and go to sleep on the fold-out couch, but instead I snuggled up behind him and spooned for a while and one thing led to another... the best since he quit his job!

This morning I wrote "I love you" in soap on the shower glass, so that when Milord caused it to steam up he'd see it. He was completely taken aback!

Baby steps back to a proper marriage ;-)

Good Thing, Bad Thing

Last night I was talking to Milord about Princess, and how when she comes home from daycare I always ask her what was the best thing that happened that day (drawing on the Smartboard), and also what was the worst thing (another kid kept hitting her).

This opens up communication so much better than "How was your day, and what did you do?", which in general seems to be answered by "Fine" and "Nothing" by most kids! We can talk about the good things, and explore the bad (why was the other kid hitting her, did she tell a grownup, what happened next [he was being a lion (!), yes, and the grownup stopped it]).

Milord was very impressed, but all credit goes to my eldest cousin who blogged about using this technique with her son. Yay, cuz!

I hope that by starting this sort of discussion at an early age we will keep the lines of communication open as my kids grow up and encounter more good things, and bad things.

Anniversary!

8 years ago today I moved to Australia!

Wow, time flies.

So much so that it has been a month since my last post! I'm just a bit busy. Work, kids, Christmas, etc... and lots has happened that I'd love to blog about but I don't seem to find the time to pay bills never mind blog! I have an insane deadline and very little me-time.

Excuses excuses.

My new year's resolution is to work on my marriage. Last year was a bit rough, and while we have managed to hold things together in spite of my fury and disappointment there is a definite spark missing. Time to let go of the baggage and find some joy in each other again!

What are your resolutions?
