Princess Update

All is well here. Princess will be 5 months old on Monday. She is awesome, and I am loving being a mum.

Everyone says her eyes are the exact same shade as mine...

I've started a "yummy mummy" boot camp in the park once a week. Ouch.

Fell off the wagon after 3 weeks and a 2kg loss. 5kg to go to pre-preg weight.

I am training Princess to sleep unwrapped (because she is starting to roll and the wrap worries me). We are both exhausted! Today is going lots better though, and in a couple more days we may have it cracked. Then I just need to wean her off the dummy! By 6 months old I want her to be able to go to sleep without "external aids" like wrapping, rocking, dummy etc. Because at 6 months we'll be getting stricter about naptime and bedtime. At the moment I can spend up to an hour returning to rewrap her or replacing her dummy. At 6 months we'll be doing the "ignore for 5 mins, 10 mins, 20 mins, etc" technique, and it's only fair that she's not addicted to wraps or dummies at that point.

I am researching solids - I plan to skip mush and go straight to finger foods. Super messy but low stress because your baby gums on chunks of whatever you are having. We think we see 2 little bottom teeth on the way in Princess' mouth. Maybe. No "teething" symptoms... I'm not sure I believe in "teething" symptoms - I think that's a catch-all answer for why your baby is clingy/unsettled etc. Before 4 months old everyone says "wind".

Otherwise, Princess is beginning to reach for things and grasp them (and nom on them). She is rolling onto her side. She likes being held up in a standing position, and is very close to sitting unaided. Tummy-time is no longer a bad thing.

Mmmm, what else? Milord is building a deck outside. Paid for by credit card. Which is almost maxed out and we have no way to pay it. He is still only employed part time, and we can't wait for the economy to pick up so that his company will take him back on full salary. *sigh*

Ah well, it keeps him busy and adds equity to the property.

Princess Video

Princess has a new chatterbox sound:

She uses it while playing - and also when she is waking up or going to sleep we hear her singing through the monitor. Too adorable!

Milord and I have the weekend papers delivered, and read them in bed with coffee. Princess supervises.

My Granny

My Granny died yesterday. She had just turned 90 and had been frail for a long time - I'm pretty sure she would have been ready to go. Still, she was my last grandparent and it is sad to lose the last of that generation.

My Granny wasn't very "grandmotherly" - I reckon having 8 children herself (my youngest uncle is about the same age as my older sister!) cured her of any mushy feelings towards her grandkids. She was still my Granny though, and I'll miss her.

This is the last time I saw my Granny - on my wedding day nearly 2 years ago. She made a valiant effort to cross the country to see her second-eldest grandchild wed, and I was honoured to have her there. I am also very glad that she lived to see the birth of my Princess - her 3rd (I think... I lose track of my many cousins) great-grandchild.

Sadly, I won't be able to get to South Africa for the funeral, but I know my enormous family back home will give her a great send off.

Bye bye Granny. I love you.

PS. My Dad asked me for a few memories of my Granny for the eulogy, so I'll do them here too.

  • Her nails and hair were always perfect, and she had the most amazingly colour-coordinated trouser suits and twinsets.

  • She made the best home-made ginger beer and preserved figs.

  • We'd visit for long Sunday lunches with tons of food - Sis and I would almost be ill from over-eating!

  • She would save me the movie star teen-idol pin-ups from her magazines.

  • When she visited London while I was living there she insisted on going to a casino and gave me 50 pounds to play with. On another evening I took her to a ship-pub on the Thames and she bought me drinks!

My dad has been asking for video of his grandkid. Let's give it a shot. Princess has started getting very splashy in her bath these days! It is a far cry from when we first brought her home and she was lost in the baby bath...

I was wondering... is this too nudie a video of Princess? Am I going to have undesirables dropping by? If you think it's a bad idea I'll take this post down and put up something else.

Update: In response to the questions, the baby bath has a built in moulded bath seat - a bump between her legs and ridges beside her torso. That's what is holding Princess above the water in spite of her best efforts to drown!

Princess Update

Happy New Year!

Our New Years Eve was very quiet. The boys played Xbox, our hostess went out to a party, the kids slept and I read my book. Milord came outside to watch the distant fireworks at midnight and had a snog with me, and then we crashed off to bed. A bit dull, and I'm sure my hostess wished she'd stayed at her friend's party instead of coming home for midnight!

We are now home in Sydney, enjoying the relative coolth and lower humidity. While it was lovely to be away in the heat for a while we were all very ready to come home. I couldn't live in the tropics - it's exhausting to be that sweaty all the time!

We are all very tired. Not only did the heat cause us to sleep badly, but our bedroom faced east and dawn was before 5am every day! Princess found the change of scene unsettling and stopped sleeping through. Plus we all caught a cold in turn - Milord brought it home and was a sore-headed-bear. Princess caught a milder version off him and was a limp grumbler. Then I got an even milder version from her and just ached and sniffed.

Since being home we were all sleeping like the dead, but I've been harbouring another cold and now Princess has caught it off me. So no sleeping through yet - she's waking every 4 hours for medicine (which she hates, poor little thing), food and a cuddle. Milord says he had forgotten what waking every 4 hours is like! I hope tonight is better...

Apart from that Princess is thriving like a weed.
Weight: 6.7kg
Length: 65cm

This puts her just above average for her age on the weight and height charts. Perfect.

She's getting very strong at holding her head up during tummy-time, and has really begun enjoying her bath - especially now that she fits properly into the seat bit of the baby bath.

Princess' evening "Toxic Time" has finally passed. While Mom was here Princess started going to sleep around 8pm from time to time, and over the last few weeks she has been falling asleep around 7pm. I am now able to begin to implement an evening routine, where between 6pm and 7pm Princess has a bath and a feed, then sits in my lap while I read a book to her. At 7pm I put her to bed. Sometimes she goes to sleep easily, and sometimes I have to go in every 10 minutes to comfort her until she drops off, but it is wonderful to have a routine at last!

Of course this interferes horribly with dinner-prep. What I am trying to do now is to prepare whatever is going to be required for dinner during the afternoon and pop it in the fridge. Then once Princess is in bed I can hurl stuff at the stove aiming for an 8pm eating time. Tonight Milord is cooking for us and I can sit at the computer and catch up on a little blogging - heaven!

The only thing missing is a glass of wine. I have gone off the grog for January. Mainly to kick-start some much-needed weight-loss, but also because after the festive season I am totally sick of wine and junk food! I've also begun sticking to my Weightwatchers points, doing the odd half-hour on the x-trainer and drinking a lot of water, so hopefully the excess fat will begin to melt off... wish me luck!
